What Is Therapeutic Foster Care?

Therapeutic foster care is a specialised type of foster care that provides therapeutic support for vulnerable children and young people with complex emotional needs or challenging behaviour as a result of childhood trauma or issues in their early life. It ensures these vulnerable children have access to the right support and the best care for their individual needs.

What Are The Benefits Of Therapeutic Fostering, And Of A Therapeutic Approach Generally?

Therapeutic fostering focuses on each child’s unique experience needs and meeting their individual needs. As mentioned, therapeutic parenting is often required in placements where there is a history of childhood trauma, which has resulted in complex behaviour and unmet needs. This requires therapeutic foster parents who are fully equipped to deal with these scenarios and can respond with sensitivity, consistency and insight. All children are different, which is why therapeutic foster care training usually covers a wide range of individual needs, in order to provide a therapeutic foster parent with all of the knowledge, experience and advice they need. One of the major benefits of a therapeutic approach is the team it requires. Social workers, support workers, the local authority and your fostering agency are all available to support your foster family. This way, you never feel out of your depth, we’re all here to help! Another benefit of therapeutic care is that you are able to help vulnerable children and young people to overcome these challenges, which is incredibly rewarding and results in healthy attachments and long-lasting bonds.
