Who Is Involved In The UK Foster Care System?

The foster care system in the UK is made up of a network of people, including fostering agencies, local authorities, social workers, foster parents, birth parents, other foster families, and vulnerable children and young people in need of foster care placements. All of these individuals create a community and support system.

How Does The Fostering Process Work? What Does The Fostering Journey Look Like?

When considering the fostering process in England, there are a couple of categories to consider; these are:

The First Stages – Initial Enquiry:

Every foster parent’s fostering journey begins with an initial enquiry that lets us, or another fostering agency, know that you’re interested. Before enquiring, it’s vital that you check you are eligible to foster, i.e., whether you are over 21, have at least one spare bedroom, are a British citizen or have indefinite leave to remain, and have consistent access to a car. Fostering is a full-time job, so it’s essential that it aligns with your lifestyle. At Changing Futures, your enquiry will be followed up by a home visit, where we can provide you with more information about our fostering agency and how the fostering process works.

The In-Between Stage – Assessment, Training And The Fostering Panel:

The most crucial stage of the fostering process is the fostering assessment, which includes all required safety checks to ensure you are fit to look after a vulnerable child or young person. Next is training, where we aim to equip you with all of the skills you need to become caring, compassionate and understanding foster parents. Finally, in this in-between stage is the fostering panel, which involves us presenting your Fostering Assessment to our fostering panel. Their role is to make a recommendation to the agency decision maker, who has the conclusive say in whether or not you are able to become an approved foster parent. We understand that this stage in particular can seem daunting, which is why throughout the entire process, you will have the support of our team and experienced social workers.

Final Considerations – Different Types Of Foster Placements:

There are a number of different foster placements, including long-term fostering, short-term fostering, emergency and respite. During the fostering panel, a discussion will be had to ascertain what type of fostering placement may be right for you. Your preference will also be considered here, depending on what you believe to be the best fit for your lifestyle. This also ensures that foster children have the best possible environment for their exact needs. You can find out more about the different types of fostering placements by clicking here.
